Abstract

Herein, the characteristics of the paper used in the Buddhist scripture “Transcription of Shurangama Sutra (The Sutra of the Heroic One) in Silver on White Paper, Volume 10,” from the late Goryeo period were studied to elucidate the treatment used for its conservation. The text paper of the scripture comprises 13 connected sheets of paper (thickness = 0.10–0.19 mm). Fiber analysis of the text paper revealed transparent membrane and crossmarking, confirming the use of mulberry bast fibers. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the fiber orientations in the front and back sides of the paper were different, indicating that it was produced using the Oebal-choji method. The front side showed signs of treatment to fill the fiber pores. The infrared absorption spectra of the organic materials on the paper surface were similar to those of the standard materials treated with animal glue, suggesting that glue was probably used in the surface treatment of the front side. The paper color exhibited a gradual darkening from the first page to the last page. Colorimetric analysis revealed that toward the latter part of the paper, its lightness and yellowness decreased, whereas its redness increased. Based on the results of previous analyses, a paper with a thickness similar to that of the text paper was prepared, color-matched, and coated with animal glue to serve as a reinforcement paper used for conservation treatment of the Buddhist scripture.
