Abstract

This study aimed to develop a conservation treatment method for carbonized wood in contemporary artworks. The study was conducted on carbonized Salix spp. wood samples. Dammar, Beeswax, Aquazol 200, animal glue, and Paraloid B-72 solutions at concentrations of 1% and 2% were sprayed on the samples; subsequently, the weight and color changes as well as the characteristics of the penetration and diffusion of each solution in the samples were analyzed. Beeswax was the most suitable material for conserving the original color of the carbonized wood while effectively filling wood fibers and vessels. Furthermore, the 1% Beeswax solution spray treatment demonstrated higher color and gloss stability over repeated applications compared with the 2% solution spray treatment. Thus, the 1% Beeswax spray treatment was determined to be the most suitable conservation treatment because it preserves the esthetics and authenticity of artworks.
