Abstract
This study analyzed inquiry-based elements embedded in science textbooks prescribed by the common national curriculum and discussed the implications of these constituents vis-à-vis teaching expertise in scientific inquiry. Two popular authorized science textbooks were selected for the study’s analysis: one for elementary school and one for middle school. Three researchers independently scrutinized the inquiry-related elements in the two designated textbooks. The three researches then repeatedly discussed any discrepancies identified during the cross-checking process until consensus was achieved. The final five inquiry-related elements and 22 sub-components of the textbooks were inductively derived through this iterative process and are listed as follows: (1) inquiry-based reasoning methods (inductive, abductive, and hypothetical-deductive), (2) inquiry-related skills (science process skills, and scientific practices), (3) types of inquiry activities (based on observation, experiment, research, cultivation, exploration, making, and modeling), (4) inquiry-related summary activities (explaining, presenting, discussing/debating, scientific writing, playing, role-playing, and explaining through drawings), and (5) digital inquiry activities (using audiovisual materials, collecting and sharing information, and using digital inquiry tools). The analysis of the frequency of each inquiry-related element in the activities included in the textbooks revealed a disproportionate emphasis on certain subelements across the five categories. The Refined Consensus Model (RCM) was employed as the theoretical framework for the discussion of the implications of these findings for teaching expertise in scientific inquiry, and the five inquiry elements were incorporated into the professional knowledge bases of RCM. The results revealed that inquiry-related methods and skills were aligned with the domain of content knowledge, while inquiry-based activity-types, summary exercises, and digital tools were aligned with pedagogical, student-acquired, and assessment-related knowledge. These study findings enable the recommendation that future research initiatives should elucidate the components of teaching expertise related to scientific inquiry.
