Abstract

The metaverse has the potential to enhance science education effectiveness by fostering active learner participation through immersive virtual environments and providing learning opportunities that are often difficult to realize in real-world settings. This study analyzes a real case study of a pre-service elementary teacher who planned and implemented a science lesson using the metaverse, aiming to explore the teacher’s motivations, instructional strategies, challenges, solutions, as well as his use of reflection and professional growth. The results reveal that the pre-service teacher’s openness to exploring new teaching methods, along with their prior experiences in doing so, motivated their use of the metaverse in science lessons. The pre-service teacher perceived the metaverse as a strategic medium for achieving learning objectives by overcoming spatial limitations in science education and expanding opportunities for inquiry-based experiences. While designing and implementing the lesson, the teacher reconstructed textbook-based, spatially limited activities into learner-driven inquiry, utilizing the virtual space as a platform for problem solving. Various challenges arose-such as the technical limitations of the platform and differences in students’ manipulation skills-which affected lesson implementation. Nevertheless, the teacher demonstrated problem-solving abilities by using supplementary tools, adjusting operational methods, and preparing for addressing challenges in advance. During reflection after the lesson, he noted that the metaverse is not a panacea for teaching and recognized the need for considering students’ characteristics and responses in lesson planning. This study discusses the implications of these findings for pre-service teacher education and the development of metaverse-based science education.
