Abstract
This is a study of the Large Banner Painting(掛佛畵) of Buddha Trikaya(三身佛) in the collection of Gapsa Temple. The painting carries great significance in the history of Korean Buddhist painting not only in the formal and stylistic aspects but also in the philosophical aspect. The painting, which was produced in 1650, is characterized by its unique composition having the three Buddhas(Dharma-body, Reward-body, Transformation-body) in one screen. Also for their dignified looks and brilliant coloring, it can be evaluated highly as the work to represent the time. With the Flower Garland Sutra(華嚴宗) emerging as the center of Buddhist philosophy, paintings of Buddha Trikaya and the Gathering of the Buddha Trikaya were widely produced at that time. Also, it was during that time that the religious system centering Sakyamuni and that centering Vairocana were combined. Especially in the case of the Gathering of Buddha Trikaya, large banner paintings for large sized Buddhist events were widely produced at that time, which provide important materials for the understanding of the religious tendency of the time. Gapsa Temple's Large Banner Painting of Buddha Trikaya also reflects such religious circumstances and provides a clue to grasping the flow of Buddhist painting in the 17th & 18th centuries. More close examination and analysis of the documents related to the painting and the painters is expected in the future along with a wider scope of stylistic comparison and in-depth research in the history of Buddhism.
