Abstract
The Yeombul‐sa Temple in Mt. Surak at Sanggye‐dong, Nowon‐gu, Seoul has a wooden seated statue of Avalokitesvara created in Ganghee 34 (1695). It was originally an attendant Bodhisattva on the left side of the Amita Buddha Triad erected at Bongil‐am and Sudo‐am in Jangheung, but was moved to the present location and has been enshrined in the Yeombul‐sa Temple for several decades. The height of the wooden seated statue of Avalokitesvara is around 59cm, and its garment‐suspended seat covered with the drape flowing down gently over the lotus pedestal draws attention. In addition, according to the record on its creation found in the chest of the abdomen, the statue was made in 1695 (Ganghee 34), and it is particularly meaningful because its creators are Deukwoo and Deokhee, two of Saeknanpa sculptors who are considered the most influential sculptor monks in around 1700. The iconic characteristics of the wooden statue of Avalokitesvara at the Yeombul‐sa Temple are the short and squire body, the decorative and magnificent crown, and the modified style leaving the right shoulder bare except the end of the shoulder, and these characteristics were common in the 17th century. In addition, the pedestal was created separately from the statue. The pedestal was expressed with a lotus pattern using an upward lotus and a downward one, and very characteristically the garment‐suspended seat has the drape flowing down to the center and the left and right side in the shape of a lotus. When the characteristics of the style was examined and the chronological order was determined, it was expressed similarly to Saeknanpa Buddhist statues in terms of the body proportion of short body and large head, square formative beauty, and stiffened volume. The expression is particularly almost identical with that of Buddhist statues created in the same age such as the seated statue of Shakyamuni at the Cheoneun‐sa Temple and the seated statue of Amita in the Amitabha Hall at the Ssangbong‐sa Temple, which were erected in 1693 and 1694, respectively. This suggests that these Buddhist statues might also have been sculptured mainly by Deukwoo.
