앙코르와트 제1회랑에 나타난 '32지옥도'의 도상특징과 그 의미

이 논문은 앙코르와트 제1회랑에 나타난 ‘천국과 지옥’ 중에서 ‘32지옥도’의 조성 배경을 비롯하여 구성 형식과 도상특징을 살펴보고, 그 도상의 기원과 전파의 고찰을 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 앙코르와트 제1회랑에 나타난 ‘32지옥도’에 관련된 연구 논저 등의 연구사를 검토하여 지옥사상의 기원에 대해 살펴보고, 그것이 어떻게 시각적으로 묘사되었는지 그 표현기법과 도상특징 등을 살펴보았다. 다음으로 앙코르와트 ‘32지옥도’ 도상의 양상과 아시아 각국에 전개된 지옥도를 종류별, 도상별로 구분하여 지옥도상의 전파과정을 고찰하였다. 특히 앙코르와트 제1회랑에 나타난 ‘32지옥도’는 각문에 의해 지옥명이 판명되어 있는데, 지옥명과 부합되지 않는 구성 및 도상특징을 보이는 장면도 발견되는 등 앞으로 더 연구해야할 과제로 생각된다. 아울러 지옥도상은 앙코르와트의 예처럼 조각으로도, 미얀마의 사찰 내부의 벽면이나, 우리나라의 시왕도나 감로도처럼, 그리고 일본의 두루마리에 그려진 지옥도처럼 회화의 기법 등 다양한 제작기술을 통해 묘사되고 있으며, 동남아시아의 미얀마와 태국, 그리고 동아시아의 중국, 일본, 한국 등 지역별, 시대별로 광범위하게 분포되어 있어서 아시아 지옥도의 기원 및 전파라는 측면에서 앞으로 더 살펴볼 과제라 생각된다.
Abstract
The objectives of this study were to examine the background, structure, and iconographic characteristics of the ‘32 Hells’ in ‘Heavens and Hells’ carved on the 1st Gallery of Angkor Wat, and to investigate the origins and transmission of the icons. For these purposes, we reviewed previous studies on the ‘32 Hells’ in the 1st Gallery of Angkor Wat, focusing on the origin of hell thoughts, namely, Indian hell thoughts, and examined how the thoughts were expressed visually including the expression techniques and iconographic characteristics. Moreover, we classified icons in the ‘32 Hells’ of Angkor Wat as well as hell paintings in Asian countries, and analyzed the transmission of hell icons through the Asian region. The names of the ‘32 Hells’ in the 1st Gallery of Angkor Wat were identified by inscriptions, but some scenes showed compositions and iconographic characteristics not consistent with their names, and further studies may be required in order to explain the disagreements. What is more, hell icons are depicted by various techniques as in the reliefs of Angkor Wat, wall paintings in Myanmar temples, Ksitigarbha paintings or Amrita paintings in Korea, and hell scroll paintings in Japan, and they are distributed extensively by age and by region including Southeast Asian countries such as Myanmar and Thailand and East Asian countries such as China, Japan and Korea. In this sense, Asian hell paintings need to be studied further in terms of their origin and transmission.
