Abstract

The results of the study on the Painting of the Nine Grades of Paradise in late Joseon are as follows. First, the background of the composition revealed that the idea that Chimnyeom amitabul chanting so called Namuamitabutsu, would bring them an eternity passage into paradise was greatly prevalent in late Joseon, especially in the late 19th century Joseon. Second, this thought of an eternity passage into paradise was evolved into an iconography, obviously divided into three forms such as the first type of the Painting of the Nine Grades of Paradise with the upper and lower two levels, the second type of split screen in the painting of the Nine Grades of Paradise, and the third type of the dragon boat receiving sentient beings in the painting of the Nine Grades of Paradise. Third, the significance of the painting of the Nine Grades of Paradise, was as Buddhist paintings with the most important characteristics in the Buddhist painting iconography in late Joseon.
