Abstract

This research is about the origin of Nihonbuyo schools that is peculiar as its source is from Shosagoto of the Kabuki that has about 200 schools if it includes small schools at present. The number tends to be increasing recently as they are branched off from large schools or old names are revived. Most schools were originated from choreographers in Edo period. Many schools regard an actor or a choreographer of Edo period as their forefather of the stream. It was found out in this research that the origin of Nihonbuyo schools is from the Kabuki choreographers in Edo period, and ʻIemoto systemʼ was greatly reflected on the establishment of schools. ʻIemoto systemʼ is the personal structure and a sense of value which is greatly reflected on the background of continuing school besides its artistic characteristic. It has a typical pyramid type structure that only a few number of people takes the high ranks with ʻIemotoʼ or the head of family while the number gets bigger in low ranks with pupils or grandchildren. Iemoto system is the expression of oriental sense of value, namely, the expression of family-oriented sense of value that emphasizes blood relation rather than personal ability or qualification. The thought that the organized work could be eternally handed down if no operational mistake happens facilitated Iemoto system. It was self-defensive wisdom of Iemoto system members to survive. This was similarly applied to the protection system for intangible cultural assets in Korea. This view point is especially effective for Koreans who are constantly seeking ways to transmit traditional dance. This research may provide a new aspect on comparison research in many sides about the transmission method of traditional dances in Korea and Japan, and would help understanding about Edo period in Japan in aspect of Japanese dance and artistic-sociology field.
