Abstract

This paper is intended to: figure out what the sources of the two representative uses of the folk Paintings of Dragon and Tiger—as Door God and Decorative Painting--are, identify the typical paintings of them, and clarify through what procedures they were brought into folk arts. At first, the paintings of Dragon and Tiger symbolized the authority and dignity of the great people like heroes and kings. Along with that, from Han Dynasty, as tigers got recognized as the symbol of averting bad luck, to put a dragon-tiger painting on the front gate of a house developed into the traditional custom of Door God even. Like this, the Paintings of Dragon and Tiger played a role of symbolizing the authority of heroes or kings or function as devil dispellers and talismans. When it comes to Korean Paintings of Dragon and Tiger, basically that of a painter monk Much ‘i’ in Southern Sung Dynasty has become the model. Although the influence from Ming Dynasty’s dragon-and-tiger paintings is felt, the basics of these paintings also go back to paintings of Much’i. As written on the funeral odes, Paintings of Dragon and Tiger are symbolic of the emergence of heroes. This sort of dragon-and-tiger paintings in the 16th century got popular right after the Japanese invasion into Joseon in Imjin period, as Ming Dynasty’s Dragon and Tiger Paintings was introduced into Joseon. A look at the Paintings of Dragon and Tiger drawn in those days reveals that they have the style of Ming Dynasty’s temple group although they were basically Sung Dynasty’s icon of paintings similar to Much ‘i’s, which indicates that they were influenced by Ming Dynasty’s version of Sung Dynasty paintings. This sort of Much ‘i style’s icon of the dragon-line-paintings had been influential up until 19th century and is used, like Much ‘i’s, not only for decoration that is symbolic of authority, but also as New Year paintings. The Paintings of Dragon and Tiger are Door God Paintings that symbolize blessings and averting bad luck that is, five blessings dragons would bring and three catastrophes tigers would dispel. The Paintings of Dragon and Tiger in folk art, being primarily Door God Paintings, include Decorative Paintings that are symbolic of authority, original meaning of them. However, whatever uses the dragon-and-tiger paintings were, they were transformed into the images full of satire, because within those paintings are contained the desire of the ordinary people for the equal world by lowering the authority of the tigers and the dragons.
