Abstract

The wooden Amitabha Buddha statue at the Beopseong Zen meditation school is a wooden Buddha statue that shows small and graceful features, and it is regarded as an important wooden Buddha statue with so called Iphyeonsanghyeonjwa, a unique iconographic characteristic of head sculptor monk, Sangjeong. First, it suggested the peculiar and unique characteristics of Sangjeong (尙淨), identified as the head sculptor monk who created the Amitabha Buddha statue at the Beopseong Zen meditation school, which are the Amitabha Hapumjungsaengin (下品中生印) deformed hand gesture, graceful face with a smile on all the face, and Iphyeonsanghyeonjwa (立蓮裳縣座). Second, based on Sangjeong's unique iconographic characteristics, the iconographic characteristics of the Beopseong Zen meditation school Amitabha Buddha statue were revealed in detail. Third, the style characteristics of the Amitabha Buddha statue at the Beopseong Zen meditation school were analyzed through a comparative history method with the Amitabha Buddha statue at Hoeam-sa temple (1755), a Buddha statue of Sangjeong's creation, and the Avalokitesvra Bodhisattva statue at Seokwang-sa temple (1755), a Bodhisattva statue, and the date of its creation was judged to be between 1755 and 1760. Fourth, the artifacts inside the statue chest of the Amitabha Buddha statue at the Beopseong Zen meditation school, Huryeongtong and wrapping cloth, and the Saddharmapundarika Sutra (six Volumes) were examined and their connection was discussed. Fifth, the cultural value of the Amitabha Buddha statue at the Beopseong Zen meditation school is judged to be sufficient to be designated as a national cultural property when considering the uniqueness of the iconography, the rarity of the Buddha statue created by Sangjeong, and its outstanding formativeness.
