Abstract
There is the Wangyong‐sa Temple near the top of Mt. Hyeong at Gukdang 2‐ri, Gangdong‐myeon, Gyeongju (149‐01), and on the Sumidan in Daewoong‐jeon of the temple are enshrined four old Buddha statues including a wooden Amitabha Buddha statue, two small Buddha statues, and a small stone Mercy Bodhisattva statue. These statues were made in different ages, and the wooden Buddha statue had the absolute year of 1466, and the two small Buddha statues of 1579. Because they are Buddha statues from the early Chosun Dynasty with clear chronology, they are considered very important articles in studying the Korean history of scripture. First, as to the background of creating the Amitabha Buddha statue, a representative Amitabha Buddha statue from the early Chosun Dynasty, was erected at the Mireuk‐sa Temple in 1466 and transferred to the Hwanseong‐sa Temple. The sponsors were some 60 donators including those from the royal family, the noble class and the common people. In addition, nearly 100 monks offered prayers. These suggest the influence of the temple. The wooden Amitabha Buddha statue was erected in this background. Second, the iconographic characteristics of the wooden Amitabha Buddha statue are the pointed precious stone on the forehead, the large precious stone at the center, the relatively long robe, and the slim and long body, and upright posture. These characteristics, which are similar to the wooden Amitabha Buddha statue at Heukseok‐sa (1458) and the wooden Amitabha Buddha statue at Cheonju‐sa (1482), are considered new iconographic styles in the early Chosun Dynasty. Third, the stylistic characteristic of the statue is its slim, long, emaciated and upright appearance. This is considered a new composite style that combined the traditional style of Korea and the Tibetan style from the Ming Dynasty among the three styles popular in the early Chosun Dynasty. The statue was confirmed to have been created in 1466. This suggests that the wooden Buddha statue represents the characteristics of the style of Buddha statues during the mid 15th century. Fourth, from the wooden Buddha statue were found many pieces of clothing. As there are many materials essential for studying Buddha statues from the early Chosun Dynasty including the records of temple construction and reconstruction and Bokjangsarijangeom scripture Tarani, the Buddha statue has been proved the masterpiece in its days. Particularly among the scriptures, the 2nd volume of Myobeopyeonhwagyeongsammaechambeopo (1326 revised edition), and 4th volume of Beophwagyeong (1543 revised edition) should be designated and preserved as national cultural assets.
