Abstract
The Sakyamuni Buddha statue of Arhat Hall at Ha-dong Ssanggye-sa temple, is evaluated in many ways as a representative 17th century Sakyamuni Buddha statue created by head sculptor monk Seungil along with 16 Arhat statues in 1644. First, on the afternoon of June 17, 2024, the origin text of the Sakyamuni Buddha main statue of the Arhat hall enshrined in Palsangjeon was investigated. As a result, it was confirmed that this Buddha statue was the main Buddha statue of Yeongsangyoju of the Arhat hall created by head sculptor monk Seungil and his school in 1644, and was moved to the main Buddha statue of the Arhat hall. Second, these main Sakyamuni Buddha statues of the Arhat hall were confirmed to be disposed with the statues of venerable Kasyapa and Ananda on the left and right, and the 16 Arhat statues, and it was revealed that they were originally Buddha Triad and 16 Arhat statues without Maitreya and Jehwagala Bodhisattva, the three guardian deities. Third, the Sakyamuni Buddha statues in the Arhat Hall along with the 16 Arhat statues, have formal charac teristics such as a large head in proportion to the body, a large square and plump face, a solid body, and high and large knees, which succeeded the Three World Buddha Statues of Daeungjeon by head sculptor monk Cheongheon in 1639, and junior sculptor monk Seungil, and then the characteristics that continued with the Three World Buddha Statues of Jeongsu-sa temple by Seungil in 1648, and the Three World Buddha Statues of Bongeun-sa temple (Yaksa-Amitabha) by Seungil in 1651. Fourth, it was revealed that the Sakyamuni statues in this Arhat hall have great significance as the statues that laid the foundation for the Buddha statues of head sculptor monk Seungil.
