Abstract
The purpose of this study is to draw conceptual frame of Gesamtdatenwerk and its characteristics from R. Wagnerʼs Gesamtkunstwerk to information art concept and to interpret whole artistic quality and media aesthetics meanings of Synchronous Objects for One Flat Thing, reproduced(2009) by William Forsythe, which is a modern dance example as an object of discussion. This Forsytheʼs work was adopted as a form of information art in online from the stage version he created in 2000. It is a good example of the concept of Forsytheʼs choreographic object, which is one can have a physical thinking without a dancing body. Forsytheʼs work as Gesamtdatenwerk brings following five discussions in a media aestheticsʼ point of view. First, making data of dancing motion performed in the work shows invisible underlying factors in dance, especially qualitative characteristics and also visualizes dancing thoughts and knowledge area hidden in dance. It is different from simply analyzing external and quantitative data by movement sensing technology such as motion capture. Second, digitized dance information is ultimately synchronous object from one dance information although it is expressed with 20 visual objects that look formally irrelevant. Third, as a web based artwork, it disjoints the linear manner of developing the dance and audience complete their own interpretation within the loose frame of meaning that artist set. Forth, based on network, it makes audience appreciate and concentrate on work from in traditional meditative method to in analytic method. In this work, it is discovered to ecology reasoning that continually changes and creates sensible form, not as a completed work. Lastly, as Gesamtdatenwerk, Forsytheʼs works are not just the reproduction of dancing data, but lead to the birth of new media work and integration of art based on dance.
