초록
This study focused on the fact that brand stores have a higher survival rate than non-brand storesin a market environment where there is a high risk of business closure. Survival analysis is appliedto compare the closing risk between brand stores and non-brand stores. This study tried to verifyempirically the impact of the brand on the survival and closing of stores. For the analysis, a totalof 2,722 F&B stores data, which were opened in 2011 in 222 major retail area of Seoul, were usedfrom the Seoul business license record. The result of estimating the survival function of brand stores and non-brand stores usingKaplan-Meier method shows that the survival rate of brand stores is higher from about 500 days afteropening, and the gaps in the survival rate become larger as time passes. The Cox-proportional hazardmodel also reveals the closing risk of brand stores is 0.739 times that of non-brand stores. Theseresults indicate that brand stores are more competitive than non-brand stores due to loyal customersbase and various supports from their head office. In the survival analysis conducted by a businesscategory, the result of general restaurant business category shows that the closing risk of brand storesis 0.503 times that of non-brand stores, while the difference in the closing risk is not statisticallysignificant in the snack bars business category. This result implies that the survival rate of brand storesis not necessarily higher than that of non-brand stores in the case of snack bars business categorywith a high proportion of brand stores. And when the proportion of brand stores gets higher in sameretail areas, general restaurants have recorded lower closing risk while snack bars have shown higherclosing risk. Because snack bars consist of large portion of brand stores, the proportion of brand storeshas different effects on the stores whether the stores are competing or complementary. The high closing rate of stores is becoming a serious social problem, and the results of these analysisshow whether brand stores can be a breakthrough for self-employed. In general, brand stores havea higher survival rate compared to non-brand stores, but the survival rate of brand stores is notnecessarily higher in a market environment where an excessive number of brand stores are opened. The results also suggest that the entry of brand stores should be considered as an important factorin maintaining and activating the retail areas. As the influence of brand stores varies depending onthe business category, a customized strategy to prepare for the entry of brand stores is needed basedon the composition of business categories in retail areas.
