Abstract

This paper investigates the effect of academic cliques on directors' promotion in Japanese firms. Specifically this research asks whether a shacho (Japanese CEO) tends to promote directors who are from their alumni. Controlling for the characteristics of the firm (i.e., firm fixed effects), each director's innate ability (i.e., universtiy fixed effects), and the suitability of a specific university to a specific firm, it is found that having the same educational background with one's shacho did not influence the prospect of the director's promotion. This result suggests that promotion decisions for directors are well informed with the directors' capability and their suitability for the firm, and thus, they need not rely on academic cliques.
