Abstract

This paper investigates the effect of board directors' academic majors on directors’ promotion to the board and on firm performance in Japan. Directors’ academic majors in universities were classified into two groups: The 'bunka' major group includes humanities, social sciences and related studies; and the 'rika' major group includes engineering and sciences. Our findings are as follows: First, the board composition of bunka and rika tends to be maintained. Second, as the ratio of bunka board directors increases, the firm’s financial performance partially gets worse; the ratio of rika board directors had no effect.
