Abstract
This paper empirically examines the transmission channel of the Korean bilateral trade using panel data of import and export between Korea and its trading partners, with a focus on the role of direct/indirect trade linkages. The results show that there are differences in the role of the transmission channel on the Korean trade depending on direct and/or indirect trade intensity. Specifically, the higher the direct trade intensity index, the greater the effect of depreciation of the Korean Won relative to the currencies of its trading partners on a rise in exports to them. On the other hand, higher indirect trade intensity strengthens a complementary relationship between financial integration and export. While the substitute relationship between FDI and export is more pronounced as the direct trade linkages become stronger, the complementary relationship between them is more intensified as the indirect trade linkages increase by facilitating vertical trade in intermediate goods. Finally, after investigating changes in the role of the transmission channel during the global financial crisis, we find that higher indirect trade intensity weakens the exchange rate channel, but strengthens a complementary relationship between FDI and export.
