Abstract

Jeju governor in Joseon Dynasty governed their post, Jeju Island, as a chief administrative official and supreme commander in Jeju, and their document administration is identified through a document such as appointment, report to a superior, order, and petition issued during a governing process. As a chief administrative official, Jeju governor received gosin(告身) from the king, and when they had an additional post as a commander, they received yooseo(諭書) and milboo(密符). On the other hand, the government officials appointed by Jeju governor issued certificate of appointment such as chacheop(差帖) and joengryeong(傳令). Jeju governor issued janggye(狀啓) to the king and also issued cheobjeong(牒呈) to the governor of Jeolla when they reported diverse issues, while they issued jeonmun(箋文) when the king and the royal family congratulated them on happy occasions or consoled them about a disaster. Jeju governor issued official edicts when they administratively ordered government officials belonging to Jeju provincial office such as poongheon(風憲), myeonim(面任), and doingim(洞任). The officials and people in Jeju region issued soji(所志) and danja(單子) to make petition to a Jeju governor, and for this he issued ipan(立案) or ipji(立旨). To sum up, it is proved that through document administration of Jeju governor, document system universally took effect not only in land regions but also in Jeju, an island, under Gyeongguk daejeon(經國大典) during Joseon Dynasty. On the other hand, document administration such as yooseo(諭書) issued to Jeju governor who took a dual position of bangeosa(防禦使) and chalisa(察理使), chacheop(差帖) and joengryeong(傳令) of the government officials appointed by Jeju governor, and haeyucheopjeong(解由牒呈) issued to the governor of Jeolla by Jeju governor, reflects geographical characteristics of an island far away from the central government.
