Abstract

In order to find the contribution of age-specific mortality to the changes and sex differences in life expectancy at birth (e), mortality reduction was examined by sex and period, and mortality effect was decomposed by applying Arriaga's method to the official life tables of Korea, 1971-2001. For the changes of 1971-1991, mortality of 0-14 years contributed most to the increase of e for both sexes, while mortality of 60-79 years contributed most to the increase of e for the period of 1991-2001. Mortality of 60-79 years contributed most to the sex differences in e for the year of 1971, 1981, 1991, and 2001. Mortality of 60 years and over explained 40% of male e, 54% of female e for the changes of 1991-2001, and 63% of sex difference in e for 2001. Sex difference in e is determined by the distribution of deaths. As more people survive to old age, sex difference in e will be reduced. If higher male mortality compared to female mortality for ages 45-59 years are reduced, however, male e would increase and the sex difference in e would decrease further.
