조선의 책 문화사와 책의 문화사라는 普遍史의 관점에서 조선을 바라보는 것은 구분해볼 필요가 있다. 조선사라는 틀에서는 보이지 않거나 당연해 보여서 생각해 볼 수 없었던 현상들이, 보편사적 관점에서는 더 잘 드러날 수 있기 때문이다. 이 글 은 조선의 책 문화를 일반적 책의 문화사에서 바라봤을 때 가장 먼저 눈에 띄는 세 가지 국면을 그 예로 소개한다. 그냥 지나치기 쉽지만 심상치 않은 책의 외양, 이상 하다 싶을 만한 활자에 대한 집착, 그리고 다른 문화보다 훨씬 부진했던 상업출판이 그들이다. 이 논의를 통해 조선의 책 문화를 다시 생각해보는 것이 이 논문의 의도이 다. 물론 이 세 가지 국면이 조선의 책 문화나 책의 문화사의 전면을 포괄할 수는 없 다. 그러나 피상적 관찰에서 시작된 의문이 심도 있는 논의로 전개되는 지식발견의 논리를 생각하면, 계속되는 논의를 통해 비판되고 수정되며 더 풍부한 지식으로 연결 될 것을 기대하는 것이 무의미하지는 않을 것이다.
Abstract
This article attends to the need to approach the history of Joseon books from the perspective of general history of the book, apart from the book history of Joseon. Doing so may help us see the cultural phenomena around books that remain ordinary or taken for granted when viewed within the parameters of Joseon history. General-historical vantage points often avail us insights into extraordinary aspects of a society, which are otherwise difficult to identify. This paper introduces three aspects of Joseon books, among many, that immediately stand out when observed from the general book history: The subtle but significant characteristics of the physical appearance of books, the strange obsession with movable types, and the unusually delayed development of commercial printing.
