Abstract

Using the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study, this study explores the association between occupation, health, and mortality in South Korea. In particular, this study simultaneously examines total, healthy, and unhealthy life expectancies to take a closer look at the quality of life as well as the length of life. Overall the results show that individuals with non-manual occupations have higher total and healthy life expectancies than those with manual occupations and those who were economically inactive. Further, this study finds greater occupational differentials in healthy life expectancy than in total life expectancy, indicating that occupations may have a greater impact on health than mortality.
