본 연구는 한국의 해외직접투자(ODI)에 있어, 투자유치국의 지식재산권에 대한 보호의 수준(IPR)이 어떠한 영향을 미치는 지를 실증적으로 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기존의 연구는 IPR이 ODI에 미치는 영향에 대해서 여전히 불분명한 결과를 제시하였으며, IPR의 중요성 증대와 ODI의 확대에도 불구하고 이론적 논의가 부족하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 2007년-2017년의 기간 동안 수행된 한국기업의 국가별 ODI 총액과 GDP대비 ODI의 비율을 활용하여 패널회귀분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과는 대상 그룹 및 지역에 따라서 차이가 존재하는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 기존의 연구에서처럼 무조건적인 정(+) 혹은 부(-)의 관계를 나타내기보다는 투자유치국 대상의 특성에 따라 그 관계가 달라질 수 있다는 것으로 제시되었다. 이러한 결과를 통해, 향후 한국 기업의 성공적인 ODI를 위한 IPR에 대한 고려가 어떻게 논의될 수 있는지에 대해서 보다 구체적으로 살펴보았다.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to empirically investigate the impact of intellectual property rights (IPRs) on outward foreign direct investment (ODI). It researches the case of South Korean companies during 2007-2017. According to related literature, the effects of IPR protection on ODI is still inconsistent. This study focuses on using panel analysis to investigate the evidence across regions. The results show that IPR protection has a variety of impact on ODI across the regions. It suggests that it is possible to assume that the impact of IPR are determined by the background of the host-countries. Finally, this study suggests some policy implication based on this empirical results. This findings can contribute to understanding the dynamics of ODI with IPR issue.
