Abstract
Productivity measures play an important role in economic analysis. However, the only productivity measures currently published in Korea are the labor productivity indices by Korea Productivity Center (KPC), which cover the mining, manufacturing, and electricity; gas; and water supply industries only. It is insufficient for an economy-wide productivity analysis. Moreover, the labor productivity is a partial productivity measure since not only the labor input but also capital and intermediate inputs are combined to produce outputs in the production process. Therefore, it is necessary to develop productivity measures to take all the inputs into consideration. Productivity is commonly defined as a ratio of a volume measure of output to a volume measure of input use. In this paper, we examine methods and sources to estimate labor, capital, and multifactor productivity measures, and preliminary estimates of productivity measures by industry in the market sector are presented. The market sector is defined to include industries relate to marketed activities.
