『德慧入門』은 중국에서 활동한 선교사 그리피스 존(Griffith John, 楊格非, 1831~1912)이 유교 배경을 가진 독자를 대상으로 저술한 개신교계 서학서 중 하나이다. 중국과 한국 모두에서 많이 유통되고 활용된 책으로, 초기 개신교회사에서 자주 언급된다. 그간 이 책에 관해 몇몇 연구가 진행됐지만 서적 연구에서 가장 우선되는 판본 연구가 아직 미진하였다. 이러한 점을 보완하기 위해 이 연구에서는 역본 간차이에 대한 서지적 연구에 집중하였다. 『德慧入門』은 1879년 초간된 이래 1920년대에도 계속해서 재발행되었고, 따라서 초간본과 이후 판본 간의 내용 차이가 상당하다. 초간본에서는 17장이던 것을, 1882년본에서는 한 장을 추가하여 18장으로 구성하였고 우주만물에 대해 설명한 장을 대폭 추가하였다. 1887년본에서는 신명을 ‘眞神-聖靈’으로 하였으며 성경에 대해 설명한 장의 내용을 대폭 추가하였다. 이후에도 매우 자주 많은 판본이 인쇄되어 활용되었다. 내용에서는 1887년판의 것과 동일하지만 신명에서는 상제, 신, 진신, 천주 등으로 다양하게 하여 어느 선교회, 어느 교단에서나 이용할 수 있도록 하였다. 이 글을 통해 『德慧入門』을 다루는 연구자들이 그리피스 존의 사상과 그의 책들을 살피는 선본을 선택하는 데 도움을 받을 수 있으며, 이 책의 한국어 역본 연구에서도 참고거리가 될 것이다.
Abstract
The Gate of Virtue and Wisdom (德慧入門) is a book on Protestantism written for Confucian readers by Griffith John (1831-1912), a member of the London Missionary Society who served in central China. The book was widely distributed in both China and Korea, and often mentioned in history of the early Protestant churches in both countries. Although study has been conducted on this work, comparative analysis of its diverse editions, which is prerequisite for bibliographic research, has not yet done properly. Thus this study focused on bibliographical analysis of various editions available. Since the first edition was published in 1879, the book has been continuously reprinted up to the 1920s and there is a huge difference in content between the first and later editions. For example. the first edition originally consisted of 17 chapters, but in the 1882 edition, one chapter was added to make it 18 chapters, with detailed explanation on the workings of the universe. In the 1887 edition, the term for the Christian God was changed to Zhenshen (眞神) and Ling (靈) and the chapter detailing the Bible was greatly reinforced. Since then, many editions were produced and distributed. The contents of later editions are the same as those of the 1887 edition, but the terms for God varied ranging from Shangdi, Shen, Zhenshen, to Tianzhu, reflecting the book’s wide usage by diverse denominations. This research can help researchers who study the Gate of Virtue and Wisdom select a proper edition in their study of Griffith John's thoughts and his works. Furthermore, it will serve as a useful reference for studying the Korean translation of this work.
