Abstract
This study investigates the backgrounds and career paths of officials of the Jangryeowon (掌隷院) during the late Joseon Dynasty. The institution traces its origins to the Dogwan (都官), which was established and operated in the late Goryeo period. Following a series of reforms, it was formally reorganized as the Jangryeowon during the reign of King Sejo to oversee the issuance of slave registers (bujeok, 簿籍) and the adjudication of legal disputes involving slaves. Until its abolition in 1764, the Jangryeowon maintained a hierarchical structure consisting of one Pangyeolsa, one Saui, and two Sapyeong. The backgrounds and career paths of its officials can be analyzed through the Jeongnok, a personnel register that recorded data on 1,349 officials who served in the Jangryeowon between 1637 and 1764. This includes 624 Pangyeolsa, 194 Saui, and 531 Sapyeong. Among the officials, 90.2% of Pangyeolsa, 3.1% of Saui, and 5.3% of Sapyeong were successful candidates of the Mungwa (civil service examination). Additionally, 73.7% of Pangyeolsa, 40.7% of Saui, and 37.1% of Sapyeong had passed the Saengwon-Jinsa examination In terms of appointment status, 90% of Pangyeolsa, 88.5% of Saui, and 93.3% of Sapyeong held promoted posts. Regarding prior office experience, 88.2% of Pangyeolsa were appointed from Owi (五衛, military positions under the Seoban category), while 51.6% of Saui and 77.6% of Sapyeong were transferred from administrative agencies. Furthermore, 97.9% of Pangyeolsa were appointed from Cheajik (遞兒職, sinecure posts) or reappointed among previous officeholders, whereas 77.9% of Saui and 84.7% of Sapyeong were promoted from their incumbent positions. On average, Mungwa‑qualified officials progressed from initial appointment to Dangsanggwan rank in about 16 years, whereas their non‑exam counterparts required nearly 30 years. These figures underscore how examination success institutionalized fast‑track promotion and reinforced social stratification within the late‑Joseon bureaucracy. The career trajectories of Jangryeowon officials can be analyzed by comparing Pangyeolsa who passed the Mungwa with Saui and Sapyeong who did not. The career paths of Mungwa-qualified Pangyeolsa generally followed a structured progression. They typically began their service in lower-ranking positions such as Gajuseo or Bujeongja, and advanced through intermediate posts like Jeonjeok, Jwarang, and Jeongeon. With continued promotion, they rose to higher offices such as Seungji and Pangyeolsa, eventually attaining the status of Dangsanggwan (堂上官, senior officials), and holding prestigious positions including Champan, Panseo, and even Yeonguijeong (領議政). In contrast, the career trajectories of Saui and Sapyeong without Mungwa qualifications typically began in lower-level positions such as Chambong, (Ga)gamyeok, Bongsa, or Byeolgeom. From there, they advanced through mid-level roles including Jubu, Byeolje, Sapyeong, Dosa, and Inui. The majority eventually reached local administrative posts such as Gunsu, Ryeong, Busa, Moksa, and Cheomjeong. In exceptional cases, some were able to attain Dangsanggwan status and were appointed to higher-ranking positions such as Jwayun, Uyun, Pangyeolsa, or Chamui. In summary, the position of Pangyeolsa in the Jangryeowon was primarily held by Mungwa-qualified officials who were appointed from Cheajik positions or reappointed from among former officeholders. In contrast, the posts of Saui and Sapyeong were generally filled by Eumgwan (蔭官, hereditary officials), who advanced through promotions from their incumbent posts.
