The Impact of Youth Unemployment on Burnout : Microscopic Evidence From South Korea

초록

기존의 연구들은 일반적으로 직장을 가진 이들의 소진에만 집중하였으나 구직활동으로 비롯되는스트레스와 우울 등으로 인해 실업자들 역시 소진할 수 있다. 본 연구는 청년실업과 소진 사이의인과성 파악을 목적으로 청년패널의 12차, 14차년도 자료를 활용하였다. 이 때, 12차와 14차 패널이 완전균형패널을 이루도록 조사에 성실히 참여한 응답자의 표본만 추출하여 2020년에 실직을경험한 청년 364명을 실험집단으로, 정규직 일자리를 유지한 3,423명의 청년들을 비교집단, 성향점수매칭을 통해 매칭된 289명의 청년들을 매칭 비교집단으로 설정하였다. 단순 이중차이분석과성향점수매칭 이중차이분석 결과, 청년이 경험한 실업은 소진에 유의한 양(+)의 영향을 끼치는것으로 나타났다. 이는 거시적 차원에서 청년실업을 연구한 논문의 분석과 다른 결과이다.

Abstract

Are unemployed youth more susceptible to burnout than employed youth? Existing studies on burnout have primarily focused on employed individuals. However, unemployed youth may also experience burnout due to the stresses of job searching and depression. This study aims to explore the relationship between youth unemployment and burnout. Using the 12th (2018) and 14th (2020) waves of the Youth Panel, a simple difference-in-differences (DID) analysis and a propensity score matching-difference-in-differences (PSM-DID) analysis reveal that unemployment significantly increased burnout. This finding is particularly important as it differs from the results of macro-level studies.
