Abstract

The purpose of this study is to research the life of James A. Van Fleet(1892-1992), ‘Father of the Korean Army', ‘Korea’s eternal companion’, who was appointed as the commander of the US 8th Army in April 1951 during the Korean War, and who blocked the 5th Chinese offensive, defended Seoul and laid the foundation for today’s Armed Forces. And another purpose is to find how his soldier spirit(value at the individual level) showed during the war was expressed, with a military approach focusing on the soldier spirit, such as the philanthropic devotion and sense of responsibility, and the belief in victory investigated. In addition, in response to changes in the national defense environment and an increase in the number of soldiers from multicultural families in the military, it is intended to be used as data for strengthening spiritual & mental force by discovering exemplary cases of soldier spirit in foreign soldiers. From the moment Van Fleet was appointed as the commander of the U.S. 8th Army, Van Fleet had a firm will to withdraw U.N. troops as long as the enemy situation allowed, and instead, allow the South Korean military to fill the position. He devoted himself to establishing the White Field Battle Command of the Korean Army, re-establishing the 2nd Corps, expanding 20 divisions of the Korean Army, establishing various military schools including the Ministry of Education and 4-year Military Academy, and strengthening the leadership and capabilities of officers, which are vulnerable to the Korean military. He is also a savior of the Republic of Korea, who devoted himself to developing Korean security and economy even after being discharged from the military. His cross-border military spirit teaches many lessons to us living today. First, as a soldier, he shows what cross-border dedication and sacrifice are for protecting liberal democracy in person. Second, he reminds us of the belief(will) of victory that we must win on the battlefield even in an emergency and unfavorable situation for the protection of liberal democracy, the spirit of invincibility, and the attitude of a true soldier and combat commander with true courage. Third, he regards Korea as his second country and shows humanity and a commitment attitude across borders with endless interest and passion for reinforcing the Korean military, laying the cornerstone of national defense, and modernization. Fourth, even after taking off his military uniform, he was a truly great soldier that could never be forgotten by the Korean military and many people, considering the Republic of Korea as a ‘second homeland’ with love and dedication based on friendship and trust. Considering the future role of the Korean military, changes in the military paradigm, and globalization, this study of General Van Fleet's soldier spirit will be very useful data for strengthening the military spiritual & mental force.
