Abstract
This study aimed to establish an optimal method of dimensional stabilization treatment for sound waterlogged archaeological wood prior to the conservation of Mado Ship No. 2. While the two-step PEG method is commonly used, concerns over the potential side effects of low-molecular-weight PEG have prompted a review of treatment strategies. For this purpose, cylindrical pine wood(Pinus) excavated from the Mado sea area was selected as the experimental material and subjected to two treatment protocols: impregnation with PEG 4000 alone(at room temperature and under heating conditions), and the two-step method(PEG 400 → PEG 4000, at room temperature). The change in Weight change rates was monitored during the impregnation process, and, after subjecting it to vacuum freeze-drying, its dimensional stability was evaluated through SEM, shrinkage testing, and hygroscopicity analysis. The results indicate that the heated single-stage impregnation method showed faster penetration and less surface residue, indicating higher treatment efficiency. In all the treatment groups, PEG 4000 penetrated to the heartwood, while partial cell-wall collapse was observed in the two-stage method. Although no significant differences between the two methods of treatment were observed in terms of shrinkage and hygroscopicity, the specimens treated with the two-stage method exhibited a higher moisture uptake response under high-humidity conditions. Overall, PEG 4000 single impregnation is an efficient and stable method of conserving sound waterlogged archaeological wood, while heating may offer practical advantages for large artifacts. For heavily degraded wood or artifacts showing significant internal decay, the two-step method may still be necessary. It is considered that further long-term studies on various species of wood and levels of degradation would be desirable to support the conservation of large waterlogged artifacts.
