Abstract

This study assessed the conservation environment of the Mokpo Maritime Museum at the National Research Institute of Maritime Heritage with a view to addressing climate change and changes in the cultural heritage preservation environment. To that end, an Integrated Pest Management(IPM) program was conducted with the focus on the Museum’s exhibition halls and storage areas. This program consisted of a comprehensive analysis of the conservation environment and biological hazards, including spatial analysis, temperature and humidity monitoring, pest capture and identification, and airborne microbial surveys. The results of the environmental analysis using automatic temperature and humidity loggers showed that the inside of the exhibition hall maintained stable temperature and humidity despite seasonal changes, while fluctuations in relative humidity were observed in some corridors of the storage. Pest monitoring revealed that it was primarily diptera that were captured, while springtails were observed in the underground spaces and corridors, suggesting they were introduced through the entrance doors. Although the Mokpo Maritime Museum is located on the coast, with a mountainous area rising behind it, it was confirmed that the density of pests inside was very low despite the favorable conditions for the habitat and inflow of pests. The results of the analysis of airborne microorganisms revealed that the exhibition hall and storage facility maintained levels of cleanliness that met the domestic indoor air quality standards. This IPM analysis is significant in that it provides basic data for preventing biological damages by minimizing pest damages and proactively identifying and improving vulnerabilities. In future research, the focus on prevention should shift from fumigation-based pest control to preventive control, which will require consistent, sustainable pest control strategies, including periodic monitoring and strengthening of pest control facilities.
