Abstract

In combat, the side with superior military power generally has a higher likelihood of victory. However, military power comprises both tangible and intangible elements, and superiority in tangible power alone does not necessarily guarantee success in battle. This study argues that even if a force is inferior in tangible power, superior intangible power can significantly increase the likelihood of victory. This claim is analyzed through the Battle of the Chuncheon-Hongcheon area during the Korean War. Intangible power is defined in this study as the will to fight of both commanders and combatants. An analytical framework is presented to determine the likelihood of victory based on the combination of these two variables. The analysis reveals that although the South Korean 6th Division was overwhelmingly inferior to the North Korean 2nd Corps in terms of tangible power, it was superior in terms of intangible power and consequently achieved victory in the battle. The theoretical implications of this study are twofold. First, it attempts a scientific approach by operationalizing intangible power as a combination of two variables: the will to fight of commanders and combatants. Second, it posits that intangible power is akin to a living organism, where the collective will to fight of both commanders and combatants, rather than that of specific individuals, determines victory or defeat in battle. The policy implications suggest that unit management should be centered on commanders and units rather than individual soldiers. Additionally, complementary reinforcement of science and technology, along with human resource development, is necessary to enhance overall strength.
