Abstract

This study examines how military chaplains contributed to the enhancement of the Republic of Korea military’s spiritual combat power during the Korean War. The military chaplaincy system was formally established in February 1951, in the midst of the conflict. From its inception, the chaplaincy played a vital role in sustaining the moral and psychological resilience of soldiers in extreme wartime conditions. The primary duties of chaplains included visiting frontline units, conducting worship services, administering baptisms, delivering sermons, and providing counseling in both field settings and military churches. In addition to these religious functions, chaplains often assumed broader responsibilities not directly tied to doctrine, but grounded in Christian ethics and humanitarian principles. The enhancement of spiritual combat power was rooted in two central theological perspectives: the view of life and death, and the belief in the afterlife. Chaplains reinforced the idea that life and death ultimately lay in the hands of God, instilling in soldiers a sense of purpose and acceptance amid battlefield uncertainty. The concept of the afterlife, particularly the promise of heaven, served to alleviate fear and offer hope, allowing soldiers to confront mortality with greater courage. Beyond these existential themes, chaplains actively promoted core ideological values through their sermons— democracy, freedom, patriotism, and anti-communism—aligning their messages with the broader objectives of the war effort. Although the religious activities of military chaplains did not in themselves constitute combat power in the conventional sense, they made a significant contribution to the moral and spiritual fortitude of troops. By strengthening soldiers' ethical foundations and providing emotional and existential support, chaplains helped cultivate a resilient and principled fighting force. This study highlights the multifaceted role of chaplains not merely as religious functionaries, but as key actors in the psychological and ideological dimensions of warfare.
