Abstract
This study empirically examines the impact of Korea Defense Daily (Kookbang Ilbo) subscription on enhancing soldiers’ Military Spirit. Although the Korea Defense Daily primarily functions as a channel for communicating defense policies and field news, it has also been used as a pedagogical resource for Military Spirit education. However, empirical evidence verifying its educational effectiveness has remained limited. To address this gap, this study employs the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as an analytical framework to investigate how subscribing to the Korea Defense Daily influences Military Spirit through the mediating effects of soldiers’ attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. A mixed-methods approach was adopted. For the qualitative analysis, text mining and topic modeling were conducted on subscription journals—written reflections of ten soldiers who regularly read the newspaper over a defined period. For the quantitative analysis, correlation analysis, hierarchical regression, and structural equation modeling (SEM) were performed using survey data collected from 1,002 soldiers. The results revealed a significant positive relationship between Korea Defense Daily subscription and Military Spirit. While increased subscription frequency alone contributed to higher levels of Military Spirit, positive attitudes toward the newspaper, value recognition, and perceived behavioral control demonstrated stronger effects. Additionally, positive organizational norms were found to amplify these relationships. These findings confirm that the Korea Defense Daily serves as a vital medium for fostering soldiers’ Military Spirit—encompassing national identity, perception of adversaries, and morale. The study further suggests that to strengthen this function, efforts should focus not only on increasing subscription rates but also on enhancing soldiers’ attitudes toward the newspaper and promoting favorable organizational perceptions.
