Abstract

This study investigated the condition and achievements of the project for building up ‘Center for Korean Studies Materials in Gangwon Province’ and made a proposal for measures for utilizing ancient documents related to the Gangwon region along with collecting, investigating and sorting out them and making a database. This project selected as the Promotion of Korean Studies by The Academy of Korean Studies and implemented for six years since July 2015 is part of the project for ‘building up Center for Korean Studies Materials,’ in which five subjects participated, including Gyujanggak, Jangseogak, the Yeongnam region, the Honam region, and overseas, in addition to the Gangwon region. The project for building up Center for Korean Studies Materials aims to build up knowledge contents of Korean Studies, systematically collecting, sorting out and analyzing ancient documents and ancient books, which are various historical documents scattered at home and overseas and processing and accumulating them in a standardized format. The research team has collected materials related to ancient documents, conducting the publication of the magazines of cities and districts of the Gangwon region, surveys of the basic list of ancient documents, surveys of places holding ancient documents, the publication of collections of historical materials, surveys of modern and contemporary historical materials, and translation projects since the 1990s which was before the beginning of the project, ancient documents, selected the documents for which a DB would be built up based on them, built up a DB of 3,488 ancient documents in a standardized format for six years, published 10 papers and trained talent. In the future, it would be necessary to continue to build up a DB of ancient documents for building up a standard DB of Korean studies materials of the Gangwon region and prepare a plan for the standardization of Korean studies materials of the Gangwon region and a practical plan for the composition of an integrated network. It would also be necessary to train talent that can investigate ancient documents professionally, secure a manpower pool that can cooperate for sorting out and investigating ancient documents, secure a manpower pool specialized in DB and organize an academic community of the above-mentioned manpower and institution.
