Abstract

This study compared and discussed the thought of Mikhail Bakhtin through its acceptance for the aesthetic research on Korean mask dance. Carnivalesque is a criticism term first used in his book 《Rabelais and His World》. Mikhail developed authoritative or highbrow assumptions of the traditional literature world into the literature type which intentionally overthrew, or liberated them through ridiculous humor and disorder by focusing his attention on a series of activities of a carnival which threw down or satirized a traditional hierarchy or value, which is a type frequently seen at a carnival amidst the popular culture during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Hereupon, this researcher considered that it might be possible to have a discussion about the thought of Mikhail Bakhtin through the application of the aspects of Carnivalesque to critical sarcasm, grotesqueness of breaking away from a strict harmony and form, and even the participation-oriented characteristic that makes it possible for all to be a close rapport with each other in space-time away from a daily routine by changing the laughter culture manifested in Korean mask dance, and the absurd reality of a class society to a playful type. Hereby, this study could shed a new light on diverse modes of representation through a dance performer’s body and perception, which become a major aesthetic subject of Korean mask dance from the concept of ‘Becoming’-the nucleus of Bakhtin’s thought.
