Abstract

This study examines the concept and history of Butoh, analyzing its unique deconstructive forms and expressions through metaphor. It systematically investigates how Butoh has established its distinctive identity between tradition and modernity, and explores fundamental and existential human issues. The research reveals that Butoh emerged as an expressive form in post-World War II Japan's specific social context, eventually developing into an unique art form based on Japanese culture and spirituality. The deconstruction of Butoh's expression and form was realized through four key metaphors: 'ugly beauty,' 'filled emptiness and spiritual devastation,' 'direct dream and absolute fantasy,' and 'rational tears and emptiness.' These metaphorical approaches played a crucial role in evolving Butoh from beyond a mere dance form into a platform for profound artistic and philosophical discourse. This study is significant in that it systematically examines the aesthetic and philosophical depth of this art form by analyzing Butoh's evolution from a metaphorical perspective. It also provides important implications in exploring artistic possibilities and creative adaptation methods in the context of Korean dance.
