Abstract

As the COVID-19 pandemic continued to change the world in different ways, museums were also greatly affected by it. Forced to stay closed for undefined periods of time, museums have lost their role as places where face-to-face network and communication happen, and had to seek for new ways of not only exhibiting and educating, but also maintaining relationship with their visitors. As a result, museums in Korea and all around the world have started building networks with the public making active use of virtual reality, social network services, games, and other non-face-to-face digital media programs. These cases illustrate how museums should act – replacing offline services with online programs – when their main functions are lost due to circumstances such as COVID-19, failing to perform their original tasks. Based on the ANT theory, this study examines how museums have built networks with their visitors in non-face-to-face circumstances by making use of social media and sandbox games. Social media is easily accessible by anyone with just a smartphone, and it also enables people to enjoy and share, or even upload 15 seconds to 3 minutes long videos that can be easily produced. Sandbox games can be accessed at anytime anywhere too, allowing people to easily reach digital places created by museums in virtual reality - which, combined with their engaging nature, makes them likely to be adapted in museums for educational purposes. Museums in Korea and all around the world have not only induced and interacted with visitors via sandbox games and social media, but also produced and distributed many contents and information, which were then used for educational purpose. The cases of Gyeonggi Children's Museum, Getty Museum, Metropolitan Museum, and Black Country Living Museum are analyzed in this study to investigate networks generated by museums through digital media as a notion of “translation.” The network development process, as well as the role changes and features of the actor involved, are organized, and the network is presented as models. This study emphasizes the need of maintaining networks built on digital media even after museums restore when the COVID-19 ends.
