Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the process through which novice medical interpreters adapt to their jobs, and inquire into the meaning of their job experience. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted in August, 2017 (two sessions amounting to more than four hours) with a medical interpreter who was employed at an international medical center of a teaching hospital in Seoul. Data was collected during the interview which included narratives on the employment process, job adaptation, and job experience. Following the procedures of narrative inquiry, data was analyzed and the following themes were reached: (1) happenstance, meeting a new world, (2) a new site of learning, (3) job identity: how I see myself, (4) clash of role perceptions: how others see me, (5) careers expanding. The participant’s job experience had the following significance. First, learning expanded from the classroom to the field. Second, identity was forged after experiencing a clash of different worlds in a effort to resolve conflict. Third, the participant discovered meaning in that “people” were her core value on the job.
