Abstract
As secondary school science curriculums barely cover animaldevelopment processes, students are hardly exposed to thetopic. Thus, there is a need to increase students’ understandingtoward the topic through a simple, but interesting experimentalprogram. The development process of an oyster is an idealexperimental model as it is relatively simple, yet comprehensive. Through the experiment, students can easily understand theentire process, starting from fertilization, through to the gastrula or larvae stage. Artificial fertilization can be easily carried out. After maintaining the temperature at 16℃ for about 3 to 4hours, students may observe the development of a 16-cellembryo. After 30 hours, students may observe the developmentof the larvae. As the spawning period for oysters occur betweenJune to September, schools may organize field trips at the endof the spring semester. The stages of development can beclearly observed if incubator temperatures are well maintained. In this study, the oyster development program yielded positiveresults when tested on pre-service science teachers. It wasrevealed that the program not only helped in improving theirunderstanding of the early animal development stages, but alsoresulted in a significant increase in scientific interest amongtrainee teachers. The results thus suggest that this program is aneffective scientific experiment to aid secondary school studentsin improving their inquiry skills and understanding towardanimal development stages.
