Abstract
This study explores the patterns of metavisualization components utilized in the collaborative infographic visualization processes of high school students. For this purpose, infographic on the topic of climate change were collected from four randomly assigned small groups, each consisting of three first-year students at ‘A’ high school. The students’ infographic production processes were recorded and transcribed for analysis, and activity reports written after the tasks were also used as supplementary data. Students’ discourse was coded by group and session based on a metavisualization framework, and epistemic network analysis was conducted to interpret the relationships among codes and the visualization processes. The results indicate that metacognitive strategies related to planning and monitoring problem-solving processes, visualization strategies concerning visual elements, and cognitive strategies related to data exploration and information integration were most frequently observed. Group-level analysis revealed that some groups focused more on data searching and information synthesis, while others emphasized the layout and design aspects of infographics. Session-level analysis further showed that students’ use of metavisualization components and the relationships among them varied depending on the phase of the visualization process. Based on these findings, the study provides educational implications for big data utilization and data visualization instruction, and suggests directions for future research.
