Abstract
Reflecting the growing emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches to solving complex societal problems, the 2022 revised national curriculum in Korea highlights digital literacy as a key competency and calls for inquiry-based learning with real data and convergent lessons to foster problem-solving skills. However, current science textbooks primarily present satellite data as simple visual materials, lacking the convergent inquiry activities that allow students to engage in the entire process of data acquisition, processing, visualization, and analysis. To address these limitations, this study developed an inquiry activity centered on creating RGB (Red, Green, Blue) composite images using real Sentinel-2 satellite data. Developed according to the PDIE (Preparation–Development–Implementation–Evaluation) model, this inquiry activity allows students to write code to create their own RGB images, which then expands into interdisciplinary investigations that support deeper analysis of specific topics such as rivers, cities, or forests. This process was designed to promote integrated thinking that spans various disciplines—such as geography, environmental science, and urban studies—beyond a mere convergence of science and informatics. The results of a pilot implementation indicated that the developed materials were highly evaluated in terms of student engagement, data literacy development, and practical applicability in schools. These results suggest that the proposed instructional model can serve as a practical framework for data-driven education in schools, simultaneously fostering students’ data literacy and convergent inquiry skills.
