Abstract

This study investigated elementary school students’ potential for engagement in a model-based inquiry program utilizing diverse modeling tools, specifically crafting, storytelling, and drama, and explored the characteristics of modeling practices and knowledge construction processes. The program, focusing on "Cicada Sounds in the City," was designed based on the National Science Curriculum's fourth-grade standards for "Nature of Sound" and "Biology and the Environment." Eleven 40-minute lessons were conducted with one teacher and 16 students at an elementary school in a medium-sized Korean city. The results demonstrated that students actively engaged in the program and achieved meaningful knowledge construction. In particular, modeling using crafting facilitated the visualization of models, fostering active feedback and promoting positive scientific knowledge development. Modeling using storytelling allowed for the application of scientific knowledge to various situations, leading to discussion and refinement of the model's validity. Modeling using drama enabled the expansion of knowledge through evidence-based model construction and the potential for physical expression. Model-based inquiry classes utilizing various modeling tools can be effectively applied to elementary school students, and the experience of self-constructing and expressing scientific knowledge further developed scientific ideas. Based on these research findings, we propose a modeling class that moves beyond paper-and-pencil-only modeling classes and utilizes a variety of modeling tools for physical expression, art, and literature. The findings offer new possibilities and opportunities for modeling learning.
