Abstract

This study was conducted to address the limitations of teacher-centered elementary science instruction by proposing a classroom design that connects students’ curiosity and questions with the curriculum. To achieve this, an Emergent Question-to-Inquiry Cycle Model was developed and applied in classroom settings, and its potential and educational implications were explored. The model was designed based on the ADDIE framework, grounded in prior research on question-based science teaching, and structured around four design objectives. It comprises six cyclic stages: creating a question-friendly environment, eliciting curiosity and articulating questions, sharing questions, connecting questions to inquiry, sharing and reflecting on inquiry processes, and extending inquiry to new questions. The model was applied to in one fourth-grade class over a semester. Data sources included classroom recordings, field photographs, student artifacts, teacher interviews, and student surveys. Across two curriculum units, three inquiry cycles were identified: initial questions linked to textbook-based inquiry, follow-up questions that deepened investigations, and re-emerging essential questions that expanded into more open-ended exploration. Through the implementation of the model in classroom instruction, the teacher and students recognized that cycles of emergent questioning and inquiry were effectively enacted and that they experienced growth through inquiry-based learning. Overall, the Emergent Question-to-Inquiry Cycle Model demonstrates educational significance by offering a concrete pathway through which instruction grounded in students’ spontaneous curiosity can meaningfully achieve curricular goals.
