이필주(李弼柱) 목사의 ‘그리스도인의 인격적 지식’ 논증 분석: 그의 “참으로 自己를 알나”(1922)를 중심으로

본 연구는 이필주(李弼柱) 목사가 남긴 설교“참으로 自己를 알나”를 통해 그가 밝힌 ‘그리스도인의 인격적 지식’에 관한 다양한 논증들을 개혁주의생명신학 관점에서 분석하려는 데 목적을 둔다. 그는 시편 139편 1절부터 4절까지의 말씀을 본문으로 설정하여 이 글을 작성했다. “여호와여 주께서 나를 살펴보셨으므로 나를 아시나이다. 주께서 내가 앉고 일어섬을 아시고 (중략) 나의 모든 행위를 익히 아시오니 여호와여 내 혀의 말을 알지 못하시는 것이 하나도 없으시니이다.” 이필주의‘그리스도인의 인격적 지식’에 관한 심오한 관점은 이 글 “참으로 自己를 알나”에서 고찰할 수 있으며, 이 설교는 일제강점기 1922년 7월에 발행된 『宗敎界 諸名士 講演集』에 수록되어 있다. 이 저서는 그 당시 기독교 공동체의 저명한 목회자들과 교역자들의 뛰어난 설교들을 엮은 집록이다. 본 논문 제2장에서는 이필주 목사가 생각한 그리스도인의 인격적 지식에 대해 살폈으며 그 내용들로서 자기가 자신을 아는 지식, 타인이 나를 아는 지식, 하나님께서 나를 아는 지식 등에 대해 논했다. 제3장에서는 ‘하나님에 관한 인격적 지식’에 대한 의미심장한 교훈들을 중점적으로 고찰했다. 무엇보다도, 그는 그리스도인의 하나님을 향한 순종, 讀經(성경 읽기), 일상적 기도와 회개, 하나님의 은혜와 자비를 구하는 간절한 기도, 전능하신 하나님을 의지하는 신앙 등의 실천적 조화에 큰 비중을 두었다. 부연하여, 본 연구자는 향후 이필주와 관련된 연구가 한층 확장되어 이 주제 외에 ‘그의 애국심과 삼일독립운동’, ‘그의 신앙과 목회사역’, ‘교육사역’, ‘신사참배 저항운동’ 등 다방면의 연구로 진척될 수 있기를 바란다.
Abstract
This study aims to analyze Rev. Pil-Ju Lee’s various arguments of <Christian’s Personal Knowledge> in his “Know Who You Really Are” from the perspective of the Reformed Life Theology. This text is based on Psalms 139:1-4. “O LORD, You have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; ... You are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue You know it completely, O LORD.”Lee’s profound view of <Christian’s Personal Knowledge> is based on his work “Know Who You Really Are” published in Jonggyogyeoi Jemyeongsa Gangyeonjip published at July 1922 during the Japanese colonial period. This book is the great sermon collection by famous pastors and teachers of Christian community at the period. In chapter 2 of this paper, I attempted to explain Lee’s view of Christian’s personal knowledge such as the knowledge of one’s own knowledge, the knowledge that others know me, the knowledge that God knows me, and so on. In chapter 3, I concentrated on significant lessons for Christian’s personal knowledge about God. First of all, Lee put the accent on the practical consistency of Christian’s obedience to God, reading the Bible, daily prayer and repentance of sin, earnest prayer asking for God’s grace and mercy, dependence on the Almighty, and so forth. In addition, I suggest future extensions of this research into Pil-Ju Lee’s other themes such as ‘his patriotism and Samil Independence Movement’, ‘his faith and pastoral ministry’, ‘educational ministry’, ‘resistance exercise against Shinto Shrine Worship’, and so on.
