기독교 인구의 감소와 한국교회의 쇠퇴는 코로나 3년을 지나면서 더욱 심화되었다. 이와 맞물려 교회의 공적 책임과 기독교의 공공선에 대한 강조도 부각되었다. 교회가 사회 속에서 어떻게 공적 역할을 수행해야 하는지를 다루는 신학 분야를 공공신학이라고 한다. 본고의 목적은 최근 개혁파 진영에서 자연법과 두 왕국론을 중심으로 활발하게 활동하는 데이비드 반드루넨의 공공신학을 개혁신학적 관점에서 평가하는 것이다. 본고의 진행순서는 다음과 같다. 서론에서 반드루넨의 이론에 대한 최근의 다양한 논쟁들을 예비적으로 소개하며, 쟁점이 되는 요소를 세 가지로 추출할 것이다. 본론에서는 이 세 가지에 해당하는 1) 두 왕국론 2) 문화명령 부정 3) 자연법과 노아 언약을 개관할 것이다. 이어서 그의 주장이 개혁신학적으로 정당한 지지를 받는지 검토하기 위해 성경신학적, 조직신학적 도구를 활용하여 항목별로 평가를 시도할 것이다. 결론적으로 세 측면 모두 개혁신학 전통 안에 안전히 자리하고 하기에는 다소 아쉬움이 있다는 것이 본고의 요지이다. 이러한 논구를 통해 우리는 개혁파 전통에 충실한 공공신학의 특징이 무엇인지 보다 분명하게 확인할 수가 있다.
Abstract
The decline of the Christian population and the Korean church has intensified as the three years of COVID-19 have passed. In line with this, the emphasis on the public responsibility of the church and the public good of Christianity was also highlighted. Public theology is the field of theology that deals with how the church should perform its public role in society. The purpose of this work is to evaluate David VanDrunen’s public theology, which has recently been active in the Reformed camp, especially focusing on natural law and two kingdom theory from a Reformed theological perspective. The procedure of this paper is as follows. In the introduction, I will preliminarily introduce various recent debates on VanDrunen’s theory, and extract three controversial elements. In the main body, I will outline these three things: 1) Two kingdom theory 2) Denial of the cultural mandate 3) Natural law and the Noah Covenant. Next, I will attempt to evaluate VanDrunen’s argument using biblical theology and systematic theology tools to examine whether his claim is legitimately supported by Reformed theology. In conclusion, this study finds that none of the three aspects are fully satisfactory for safely settling themselves within the tradition of Reformed theology. Through these arguments, we can more clearly identify the characteristics of public theology faithful to the reformed tradition.
