초록

This study explores the implications and applications of the social performance approach to civic education in social studies. The social performance approach provides critical and comprehensive insights into social actors’ intentions related to social issues, the influence of political power and economic interests involved in the performance process for public persuasion, the role of media in inducing public viewing, and the process through which structural problems affect the lives of individual citizens. Given that the purpose of social studies education is to foster critical awareness of social problems or issues, it is necessary to actively utilize the social performance approach that provides useful guidance for understanding the structure and aspects of events that are socially controversial in terms of social studies teaching activities and the composition of related textbooks. Based on the research content, the significance and suggestions of the research are presented as follows. First, if the social performance approach is introduced in social studies education, aside from presenting the content of social phenomena from a limited perspective, the social phenomenon can be approached in a multidimensional and dynamic manner by comprehensively grasping the actors, political power, economic interests, the role of the media, and persuasive symbolic actions related to the social issues. Second, it is necessary to improve the textbook composition system, which derives from a structural problem that acts as a limitation in applying the social performance approach. In other words, it is necessary to transition to an activity-oriented textbook composition system in which students are interested in learning topics in a self-directed, exploratory manner, as opposed to simply focusing on applying concepts and principles introduced in the text.
