신약의 교회와 선교는 예수 그리스도의 지상명령으로부터 시작되었다. 그러나 이 지상명령은 갑자기 주어진 것이 아니라 구약성경의 연장선에서 주어진 것이다. 창세기 3:15에서 시작된 “여자의 후손”을 통한 인간 구원에 대한 하나님의 구속의 언약이 예수 그리스도의 성육신과 십자가와 부활로 실제화 함으로 그리스도의 지상사역과 지상명령은 구약의 성취요 재림 때까지 계속될 신약의 출발점이다. 예수 그리스도의 지상명령은 장소와 대상 및 내용의 차이는 있지만 사복음서(마 28:19-20; 막 16:15; 눅 24:46-48; 요 20:21)와 사도행전(1:8)에 공히 기록되어 있고, 바울은 이 지상명령을 “영원하신 하나님의 명”(the command of the eternal God)(롬 16:26)이라는 표현을 사용함으로 자신의 복음사역을 그리스도의 지상명령에 순종하는 것으로 이해했다. 따라서 본 연구는 마태가 기록한 지상명령(마 28:18-20) 중 “세례 베풀라”는 주님의 명령의 의미와 선교적 함의를 연구했다. 성부로부터 보내심을 받은 그리스도는 제자들을 세상으로 보내셨다. 사람을 낚는 어부가 되기 위해 자신에게 “오라”고 하신 그리스도께서 이제는 새로운 제자들을 삼기 위해 세상으로 “가라”고 하셨다. 하늘과 땅의 “모든 권세”(all authority)를 가진 그리스도께서 제자들을 “모든 민족”(all nations)에게로 보내시면서 “제자삼아 세례를 베풀라”고 명령하신 것이다. 비록 세례의식 자체는 구원을 줄 수는 없지만, 제자들이 성부와 성자와 성령의 이름으로 세례를 베풀 때 삼위 하나님께서 역사하심으로 죄인들의 죄를 씻어 깨끗하게 하고, 그들을 새로운 피조물로 거듭나게 하여 구원받은 하나님의 자녀들이 되게 하며, 그리스도와 연합하여 교회라는 공동체에 들어가는 입문의 표징이 된다. 그러므로 그리스도의 제자들(교회)은 주님 다시 오실 때까지 세례를 베풂으로 지상명령에 순종해야한다.
Abstract
The church and mission of the New Testament began with the Great Commission of Jesus Christ. However, this Commission was not given suddenly, but as an extension of the Old Testament. God’s covenant of redemption for mankind through the “descendant of women” begins in Genesis 3:15 and it is actualized by the incarnation, the cross, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The earthly ministry and the Commission of Christ is the fulfillment of the Old Testament and the starting point of the New Testament that will continue until the second coming. Although there are differences in place, subject and content in the Great Commission of Jesus Christ, it is fully written in the four Gospels (Mt. 28:19-20; Mk. 16:15; Lk. 24:46-48; Jn. 20:21) and Acts (1:8). In using the phrase “the command of the eternal God” in Romans 16:26, Paul understood that his gospel ministry was in obedience to the Great Commission of Christ. Therefore, this study examines the meaning and missional implications that the Lord commanded “to baptize” in the Great Commission, recorded by Matthew (Mt. 28:18-20). Christ, who was sent by the Father, sent his disciples to the world. Christ had called the disciples “to come” to Him as fishers of man and now, He is calling them “to go” to the world and make new disciples. Christ, who has “all authority” in heaven and earth, sent his disciples to “all nations” and commanded them “to make disciples and baptize.” Although baptism itself is not salvific, when the disciples baptize in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Triune God washes away the sins of the sinners and makes them “born again” as new creatures to become children of God who will be saved. Baptism becomes the sign of entry into the community of the church through union with Christ. The disciples (church) of Christ, therefore, must obey the Great Commission by baptizing until the Lord comes again.
