Abstract
The Great Commission found in Matthew 28:18-20 is a missionary mandate given by Jesus the Son, who was sent by God and most accurately conveyed God’s will. The Church has devoted itself wholeheartedly to obeying this command for the past two thousand years. Bosch described this command by stating, “Today, scholars agree that the entire Gospel points to these final verses. All the threads woven under Matthew’s authorship from chapter one come together here,” thus emphasizing that the entire Gospel of Matthew culminates in this command. Upon analysis, the core and central command of the Great Commission is the making of disciples, and the Church plays a central role as the primary vessel for carrying out this disciple-making mission. Based on this analysis, the present study aims to examine the concept of “Missio Dei”(God’s mission) which is one of the most widely accepted understandings of mission today. Among the various interpretations of Missio Dei, the focus of this evaluation is on the version developed particularly by Hoekendijk, and broadly adopted and disseminated by the World Council of Churches (WCC). The evaluation finds that while the Missio Dei concept contributes positively by renewing the Church’s missionary posture and raising awareness of social responsibility, it also presents certain limitations that warrant careful consideration. These include the potential weakening of the Church, which is the primary agent of mission, and the risk of diminishing evangelistic focus due to the concept’s unlimited expansion. In particular, by incorporating God’s work in universal history into the definition of mission, the Missio Dei concept tends to broaden the scope of mission excessively-so much so that anything contributing to human well-being may fall under the umbrella of mission. As a result, the core command of the Great Commission-to make disciples-is relatively weakened. These issues call for deeper reflection within the Missio Dei framework.
