Abstract

This study analyzes the reconstruction work of cities in post-war Germany focusing on the old towns from the perspective of forming identity. It examines the reconstruction of cities being conducted in different modes depending on the region from the perspective of identity work. Destruction during the Second World War was concentrated in old town areas, and post-war reconstruction did not simply mean to return the city appearance to prior to its destruction. The historical roots of reconstruction can be traced back to architectural history of the 19th century and using this as the background, the discussion of it reverted to alternatives such as restoration, adjustment and new construction. Using the four cities of Freiburg, Münster, Lübeck, and Kassel that are differentiated by its type, this study examined how each reconstruction developed as identity work. The conclusion of this study is that “Product of Old Town” made through post-war reconstruction exhibits the work of forming identity as a local political agreement process of cities. When rebuilding the old town, the community wished to express its internal identity externally. The reconstruction work pursued by each city according to their situation unfolded in the process of linking and constructing the local community’s identity, which collapsed with the destruction of the war, with the tradition of its architectural cultures. The society that Germany built following the war was not the restoration of the collapsed Third Reich, but a project to use architectural reconstruction for cleaning up and overcoming its past. Based on the fact that the process of this work was made through consensus based on participation of its citizens, it can be said that it was a historic work for enrooting unique local identities, regardless of the type of reconstruction for the post-war old towns.
