Abstract
The formation of Chi-mi in the early modern ageLee Hyeon JinIn the beginning of modern times, the term of Chi-mi (趣味) was created by going through clash and coexistence between the traditional concepts of Chi (趣, atmosphere) and Mi (味, sensibility) and the western concepts of ‘taste’ and ‘hobby’. In 1900's, the meaning of Chi-mi (趣味) was transformed to ‘education’ or ‘enlightenment’ according to the magazine So-nyun (少年, Boys). After that, Chi-mi had been changed again to ‘taste involved in noble interest and aesthetic instinct’ under the influence of the magazine Chung-chun (靑春, Youth) in 1910's. During this period, women were encouraged to have graceful taste, and that made them as modern subject who are well-educated people by enjoying noble hobbies within the society. Most of all, modern Chi-mi had an effect on the movement of new literature in 1910's of Korea. In 1920's, when the publishing of the public magazines began in earnest like as Byul-gun-gon(別乾坤, The Strangely new world), the meaning of Chi-mi (趣味) was settled as the current usage to have various meanings like as taste, hobby, interest and pastime. On the other hand, a traditional concept of Chi-mi was emphasized by Korean writers, and then the taste of traditional art or a traditional taste was constructed in 1920's. Consequently, Korean modern Chi-mi was separated variously into the taste of modern art, a public hobby (or interest) and a traditional taste.
